Bio-based recyclable flexible polymer PMVL (poly(β-methyl-δ-valerolactone)) demonstrates monomer-level chemical recycling capability through its unique molecular structure.
In published research, specific PMVL-based polyurethane foams were depolymerized under experimental conditions, achieving a cumulative MVL monomer recovery rate of up to 97% and a purity of over 95%. The recovered MVL can be used again to prepare PMVL polyols, and the resulting polymer is essentially identical to control samples prepared from fresh MVL.
This means the circular value of PMVL lies not only in its ability to undergo chemical recycling, but in its capacity to be depolymerized back into the raw materials from which it was made, achieving a closed-loop regeneration of "polymer—monomer—polymer."
